NOSEK, STEVENS RESIGN; COVENTRY FAIR COLLECTIVE TO MANAGE

JOHN NOSEK

-

CLEVELAND Nearly two years to the day they started as managers, High Gear editors John Nosek and Leon Stevens announced their resignations at a special newspaper meeting held on July 26. Although in the future neither will function in a coordinating capacity with High Gear, each has offered to continue written contributions to the journal and to be on hand as

resource persons.

Stevens and Nosek both cited personal and educational reasons for their withdrawals. Stevens, who already has an M.A. in German Literature, plans to take an anthropology curriculum at CWRU. Nosek intends to finish his master's thesis in Higher Education at CSU and expand his work with the deaf.

In response to the resignations, the other High Gear staff have pooled their resources and parceled out various responsibilities. Instead of having an editor or co-editors at the helm, the staff has opted for an editorial collective representing all contributors. The group will meet three weeks prior to each month's publication date to plan the subsequent issue. By a strong majority vote, the High Gear volunteers voiced a commitment to keep the paper non-sexist and sexploitative.

YELLOW SPRINGS DANCE

Yellow Springs An Anita Bryant Memorial Dance will be held at Antioch College on Saturday, August 13. It will begin at 9:30 PM in the Antioch College Union cafeteria on the Antioch College campus. There will be continuous dance music, a refreshment bar, and an Anita Bryant Look-Alike Contest. All are invited.

The dance is being held to raise money to defeat Anita

Bryant and her supporters this autumn. Bryant is trying to get repeal referendums, like the one recently lost in Dade County, Florida, on the November ballot in several cities that have gay rights protection. Some of the cities facing possible referendums are San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, San Jose, Detroit, Tuscon, Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.

A one dollar donation will be requested at the door. And the refreshments will be for sale throughout the dance. Proper inIdentification will be requested at the door to ensure that everyone is over eighteen.

Those unable to attend the dance but wishing to make a contribution may send checks to HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE, P.O. BOX 411, Yellow Springs, Ohio 45387.

AKRON GAY RIGHTS MODELS

On Monday, July the 25th, The Akron Coalition for Human Rights met with Barberton City Council for the second time in an attempt of submitting Human Rights legislation.

Ed Benson of the Akron Coalition presented the council with several model ordinances and asked for the adoption of a Human Rights ordinance drawn up by Antioch College Students in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

At the last Barberton City Council meeting, Mayor Lawrence Maurer said no consideration would be given to Gay Rights. This time, however, Councilman, William Brent said that a study of the ordinance would be taken into consideration.

Ed Benson gave the council booklets dealing with homosexuality and other study materials so that they may become enlightened for their considerations.

Anyone who is interested in supporting or joining the Akron Coalition for Human Rights should call 848-1183 or 8483507. The group meets regularly the second Friday of each month.
